The news has been flying around about Jobe Watson of the Essendon bombers admitting to taking an illegal substance during the 2012 AFL season. Watson said on Monday night that he had the illegal peptide injected after the Bombers assured him it was within the World Anti-Doping Agency code. The question still remains to whether he should keep on playing and also should he keep his brownlow medal that he received at the end of the 2012 season, while under the influence of the illegal drug during that season?
I believe that Watson should be able to keep on playing this season. He admitted to taking the illegal substance but said that he did not know that he was taking it. He stated that he didn't know what the bombers doctor was injecting into him, therefore didn't take the substance intentionally. WADA president John Fahey said yesterday Watson's position did not clear him and reiterated the obligations of athletes in remaining clean of drugs.
"You are responsible for what goes into your system. It's a strict liability," Fahey told the AFL website.
As for whether he should be able to keep his brownlow is a difficult question. It was reported that the whole Essondon team was injected with the same substance during the 2012 season as well. Why should Watson be stripped of his brownlow when his team mates don't get stripped of anything?
